Just "sudo apt-get -f install" didn't help me, but:
# sudo apt-get clean
# sudo apt-get -f install

I was getting the same error message because an installed package was
broken, apparently "locking up" the system. Running "apt-get -f install"
in a terminal removed the broken package and "freed" the system, a
