Spoke to fast.
Just loaded latest update, and on my R61 lenovo the volume keys now work.

I have same problem with xubuntu 9.04 64bit ( alt cd install ) reg
ubuntu 64 bit alt cd volume keys work fine. Problem just seems to be
with xbuntu
