Hal-info is now deprecated for music players (for more information, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy). The new component in charge of this
area is now media-player-info, and the metadata describing each media
player has changed (fdi to mpi).

Applying the attached patch to
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-usb-music-players.fdi
fixes it for me. Rhythmbox now finds music on the player and uploads to
the music folder.
