Hi Evgeny,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

Turns out that I did no "grub-install" after upgrading / to ext4, as
Ubuntu 9.04 Beta Release Notes require (partly because this requirement
was nowhere to be found before today). So the bug is completely in my
head and hands, not in Ubuntu. Please mark it invalid and sorry for
disturbance.

32-bit Jaunty in VirtualBox OSE shows the same behaviour ("Error 13:
invalid or unsupported executable format" by GRUB), so the bug doesn't
seem to be hardware- or architecture specific.
