The additional python2.6 is probably because some python script uses it as
interpreter instead of the unversioned one.
Check the files in the deb to see which one is responsible for it (that's the
most common case for additional python2.x dependecies).

A simple rebuild will make it work with python2.6
I'm trying to build it with "XS-Python-Version: all" to include python
2.5 support but for some reason it adds python2.6 in the depends -
