I notice compiz is laggy here as well. Flash videos on youtube are also
lagging.

Dave: Today I'm no longer seeing (hearing :-) the problem. That could
be due to updates or maybe it's intermittent.
[I do still have an occasional interruption of audio during disk
activity (e.g., app swapping back in), but this is a different problem,
and I guess not that annoying.]
