With the latest updates of today, this problem is fixed: kmix now shows
an additional selector "Digital Input Source", which I can set to
"Digital Mic 1", so that sound recording via built-in microphone works
(for instance using Skype).

Oh, I should also add that an externally connected microscope works fine. It's
just the internal microphone that does not work.
Does that mean we need to rename the bug? I first called "Audio IN does not
work...". However, it should be "Internal Microphone does not work."

I am now pretty confident this is not but #275998 for several reasons:
a) In the original bug report of but #275998, the problem is very low volume,
but not complete lack of sound input as in my case.
b) In but #275998 people unanimously report problems in Intrepid. Some even say
it cam
