Well, I tried the aa-complain command again and still fail.
Specifically:
r...@justin-mininote:~# aa-complain cupsd
Setting /usr/sbin/cupsd to complain mode.
Warning: unable to find a suitable fs in /proc/mounts, is it mounted?
Use --subdomainfs to override.

sudo aa-complain cups
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
and then attach /var/log/kern.log?
(Sorry, I still can't reproduce this failure at all, so I depend on
your debugging info).
