Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work on Jaunty by default. That is a feature,
not a bug.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 should work though. On my system whenever I'm pressing
Ctrl+Alt+F1 for the first time, my screen goes black and shortly later
the GUI appears back again. On the second time I'm brought to the tty
