Although not official, I've been using avenard.org's packages for
updated mplayer and nvidia driver packages without issue on my 9600GT:

There is some VDPAU bugs that NVIDIA have fixed for the next release.
There is some user error with not fully removing old drivers and
manually installing the 180.35 driver.

I have noticed, and seen reports of, some major problems with this new
driver. Perhaps we should wait for the next release before upgrading.

I third this. This is a pretty major update for VDPAU, enabling VC1/WMV
accel on all cards.
