I have created an Intrepid package which solves this bug in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~dpm/+archive/ppa
In case it can be useful to someone, please feel free to test it. I am

Updates for stable release is quite long and/or impossible because of
the lack of interest of Ubuntu developpers, and the short delay before
the new stable release. I think it would be faster to request a backport
for it instead.
Sorry :(

mangle it and still let other ones (e.g. nautilus' help) be correctly
called?

This doesn't look like a conduit bug. If I run "yelp ghelp:conduit",
then it opens the help correctly. If I open "gnome-open ghelp:conduit"
(which is basically what conduit does, but via the xdg-open wrapper),
then I see the error you see (requested URI 'ghelp:///conduit' is
invalid), which sort of

Confirmed your bug.
