I have the same issue. It's definitely a bit annoying when you have to
kill workrave from the console.

I don't know the internals of any of this software, but my guess is that
workrave is blocking my input, preventing the X server or screen saver
from realizing it needs to draw the screen. Given that this only
happens with workrave, only when workrave is blocking input, and killing
workrave fixes t
