The needed fix is to monitor the panel strut. The current implementation
does read this strut only upon daemon startup (which is usually too
early or at least before gnome-panel updated its strut). The current
workaround of restarting notify-osd manually or doing some session-
startup order-magic w
Kai: If it's just part of the general gnome session initialisation, is
there any way to guarantee that?
What you say suggests that it also won't update the position it places
the bubbles if panels are moved later. Perhaps it should be periodically
checking?

I have same problem but I noticed that if I kill the notify-osd process and
after I reload it, the bubbles assume correct position.
I kill daemon with pkill and reload this with press preview button in
notification-properties.
My resolution is 1680x1050

the bubbles appear to be offset about 5-10px from the top of the screen,
but it's not obviously half way down the panel or anything like that.

This is what happens to me: sometimes the notification is not
overlapping, some other it's overlapping.
It depends on the login. Once it's overlapping, it is for the whole
session (the same if it's not overlapping).
I have compiz, a normal desktop panel (top). I removed the bottom

I have this issue as well, and since I have a rather large panel on the
right as well, it is even more obscured. It really needs to take the
panel into consideration when positioning the notice.

for me they pop up under the panel actually, the positioning is
definately wrong, notify-osd should just determine the size of the panel
from gconf and adjust the position accordingly ...
the popunder issue is very likely a starting order problem though.
