For the record, TJ also gave me more tips on IRC: since it looks like a conflict between the onboard video adapter (intel) and the external pci-e adapter (nvidia), check for BIOS video configuration. I found it, and it was checked to "auto". After reset BIOS to factory defaults, I chose the PCI-e
