Here's a guess: 1360x768 is the native resolution of HDTVs, which
probably don't do EDID, and they will just work if xorg uses that by
default?
It's a shame that higher resolutions are not available, otherwise you
could just manually select the correct one in monitor configuration
tools of Gnome o
OK, that explains the missing EDID. But I still don't understand how the
"sloppy heuristic" chooses 1360x768 for the monitor if it has no idea
about it. I would have expected a "safer" resolution like 800x600 or
1024x768.

This was an interesting one... my monitor is 17" LG L1715S. The monitor,
dock station and laptop all support DDC and I never had to configure it
manually before. So I was a bit confused until I remembered changing the
VGA cable - the new cable has no pin 9, and Wikipedia

Er... the dock station may be guilty. Do you know if autodetection works with
other monitors, or under another operating system?
