However, I still argue that "amd" should have never been in the title in
the first place, and therefore this is a bug.

iso is renamed to something like ubuntu-8.10-desktop-64bit.iso

This is no different than AMD users for years have had to use the i386,
i586, etc. versions of packages.
AMD was first with the 64 platform, hence the name is called amd64. At
the time it was not know that Intels 64 bit platform would be binary
compatible.
