I did some more testing. After using gnome for a while, I can log out,
suspend from the gdm menu and still resume successfully. When I'm at the
gdm screen, switching to a console and doing "sudo pm-suspend" also
works.
Doing "sudo pm-suspend" from a gnome terminal or from a console with
gnome runn
