gnome-power-manager doesn't block the execution of these scripts at all. Some scripts (eg, /etc/acpi/sleep.sh) contain a check to see if gnome- power-manager is running, before executing the action. On a default system, the acpi-support scripts aren't used during sleep/shutdown etc. Ubuntu uses pm
