In KDE 4.2 RC1 (as of now in Jaunty), even the plasma panel does not get
displayed properly (but only its borders), when not using desktop
effects!

flickering in Firefox has been an Xorg issue that's now being fixed.

The Xorg update didn't fix the problem for me. From the comments, it
looks like all of you are using the nvidia proprietary driver. I'm
using the NV driver.

Where did you get the nvidia driver update from? There's only 180.11 in Ubuntu
repos as far as I can see.
I could not even find any 180.x drivers on the nvidia driver download site (but
that might be "expected"?!)
