Indeed, it doesn't work on any OS, so I brought the device back to the
shop and they refunded me. I now own a new Logitech LX 8 which works
perfectly!

I noticed that this problem also occurs in Windows Vista, so it might be
more related to the mouse itself than to the operating system. I'll try
to find a computer with WinXP to test there as well and probably file a
bug report to Logitech.

After the mouse stopped working I unplugged it as mentioned and it
started to work again immediately. I think it stopped once or twice
