I'm closing this task because as it is now it doesn't seem to be
necessary to report it to upstream 'shared-mime-info'. Upstream was
already notified via the Nautilus bug report.

Nautilus says:
bin document (application/x-extension-bin)
"file" says:
/home/tim/Downloads/Savage2Install-1.5.0-i686.bin: ELF 32-bit LSB
executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.0,
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
When I rename the file to *.run nautilus says
Can you tell us what the MIME type or content type of the .bin file is?
This could be due to Nautilus not knowing this type of file is
executable due to someone else registering the .bin extension for some
other program/reason.

Of course this box is checked. I meant that when I wrote "When I click
on an _executable_ file..."
When I rename the *.bin file to *.run or just remove the extension it
executes just fine

Thanks for taking the time to report this.
Could you check under File->Properties->Permissions if "Allow executing file as
program" is checked?
This could well be the solution to your problem.
