It appears that this a known issue with some mass storage devices. Take

Thank you for reporting this issue, and attaching more information then
most reporters would. What I would like to see is a dmesg a couple
seconds after you plug in the mass storage device in hopes of seeing if
the kernel even tries.
Please attach the output of "sudo dmesg > dmesg.txt"
