libffi isn't built anymore from the GCC sources; please install the
libffi-dev package instead. If packages depending on libffi4 still
exist, these should be rebuilt.

lib32ffi4 depends on 4.2.3-2ubuntu7 when it should depends on gcc 4.3:

Hmm, your answer actually confused me more. What I was really asking was
"Is there some reason not to rebuild lib32ffi4 with a dependency on
gcc-4.2-base >= 4.2.3-2ubuntu7 instead of gcc-4.2-base =
4.2.3-2ubuntu7?" I'm still using gcc 4.2, not 4.3, simply a later verson
of 4.2 than ffi wants.

Thanks for taking time to report this bug and help making Ubuntu a better OS.
This library only exists until gcc 4.2, so it's normal to have it depending on
gcc 4.2. Moreover, this dependency is generated during the build phase, so it
can't be changed that easy.
Anyway, I suppose you need a
