Honestly I doubt this can be caused by screen-resolution-extra,
especially with the -intel driver which now reports 4096x4096 as the
maximum framebuffer size. Therefore screen-resolution-extra is never
called

I believe gnome-display-properties should be responsible for starting
metacity if you set a resolution too high since ideally it would then
switch back to compiz when you switch back to a lower resolution.

Summary : [Karmic] Changing resolution with compiz enable can lead to a
blank screen with only the movable mouse drawn.
I can reproduce a bug that is quite the same on karmic up to date.
Steps :
- Use a screen with a resolution lower than 2048x2048
- Open gnome-display-properties on use an other
