This is "fixed" in 1.1.7, which is in Debian unstable and will appear in
Ubuntu sooner or later.

Hehe, I know.
However,
a) even a misconfiguration shouldn't cause system startup to hang, obviously :)
b) I'd *want* to have all logs in one directory, so it would be nice if murmur
could be configured to log using syslog (yeah that's a feature request :) )

Let me first note that you have quite drastically changed the
configuration ;)
What happens is that murmur fails to open it's designated log, and
therefore refuses to fork (and continues using the console for output).
Murmur never has root privileges, so it can't open files it's user
doesn't have
