Where you see the ^C is where I switched back to that terminal and saw
it was hanging with no way back into the desktop

I am still experiencing this as well. I have tried running
startx -- :1
In the first tty ( ctrl+alt+f1 ) as well as running it from a gnome-
terminal and seeing what happens. Both have the same output:

Thanks; closing. If anyone is still experiencing it in Hardy beta or
newer, please feel free to reopen, but make sure to attach a backtrace
with debug packages of xserver and xserver-xorg-video-intel. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg for directions.

I have just tested this with Hardy current and it looks it is fixed.

Hardy Heron Alpha5 was recently released. It contains an updated version
of the Intel driver. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha5
Live CD from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-5/ . If you
can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your
results.
Same problem here (please reopen?)
I change to another VT and then back to tty7 and then xserver crashes and I
relogin.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810
driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.
@sancheztavo
I guess your issue is a different bug report since it does work on many cards
so it isn't a general xorg problem. I would file another bug report for your
issue
It happens to me in a clean installation of Gutsy Beta
I experience the same problem any time I do what the bug description says. I
have an nvidia Geforce 6600 AGP with 128MB and the repository drivers, so it
isn't i810 only

I experience the same kind of problem with a via video card, so it might
be a general xorg issue, not especially i810...
