This is not a bug in gnome-terminal. The problem you experience is
because the gzip'd file will contain some bit patterns which look like
control characters, which alter the mode of the terminal emulator (as
they are supposed to), so I'm closing this bug as invalid

That's not the issue, I didn't explain that well.
The problem is that afterwards everything Else has wrong characters,
including my bash prompt.

Thanks for the bug report. The reason it displays weird characters is because
that is a gzipped text file. Ti un-gzip, type the following:
gunzip manual.txt.gz
After this, you can read the file normally.
