This still happens to me sometimes in Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell Vostro V13.
I have my laptop lid close event set to Suspend, and when I manually
choose to Hibernate and quickly shut the lid, sometimes it only goes
into Suspend. I only find this out later, usually after the battery has
died.

For KDE at least this is fixed in KDE 4.2.1. If this is still an issue
in Gnome you may want to add a gnome-power-manager task by clicking the
"Also affects distribution" link and adding a gnome-power-manager task.

This happens for me too, and has happened for me since dapper. I've
always run Kubuntu, I'm not sure it that's relevant.
Other related behaviour is that in 8.10, powerdevil hibernates when the
battery level is critical, but sometimes it takes longer than expected
