Sorry, the PSU on the PC this occurred failed and i've not been able to do the
debugging. It is now replaced, and i'll
try reinstalling the fglrx-kernel-source some day soon.

OK, so your kernel module isn't available.
Try to reinstall the kernel module source
sudo apt-get install --reinstall fglrx-kernel-source
