Problem in my machine in Jaunty was solved apparently when i uninstalled the
original webcam drivers that came with the distribution and installed
ov51x-jpeg as per the instructions for ubuntu 8.10 in the page

I have the same issue with my own USB Camera/Microphone under Gnome 2.41
in Ubuntu 8.10. The exact same fault occurs if I install both the skype
package or skype-static-oss package from the medibuntu repos.
I have had to disable pulseaudio to get any kind of sound recorded by my
USB microphone.
