With help from oskar- on IRC, I solved my issue following these steps:
reboot from LiveCD, mount the partitions to /mnt/ubuntu/...
download the libc6 package
run "dpkg --root=/mnt/ubuntu -i libc.deb"
chroot into /mnt/ubuntu
run:
aptitude clean
aptitude update
aptitude upgrade
aptitude d
