This is now solved for me with 10.04.
Using 10.04 live CD on the laptop I was having this issue with, I can
get sound by switching the "Connector" in the "Output" section of sound
preferences to "Analog Output / No Amplifier".

I have an ASUS K8V-MX motherboard, which had never been used to play
sounds previously (was previously a headless development box). Recently
re-purposed it, and installed MythBuntu 10.04, and could not sound to
work at all, using the onboard VIA 8237, with the snd_via82xx module
(this was using ALS

I've had the same issue going back to 8.10, though the versions have
gotten better at detecting the hardware, just not producing any audio.

I had the same problem and solved it by adding the following line in my
/etc/modules.conf:
options snd-via82xx dxs_support=2
Then, of course, `modprobe -r snd-via82xx` and `modprobe snd-via82xx` to reload
module

I can confirm this for a Biostar U8668-D on Ubuntu 8.10.
Same V8237 audio chipset. No sound at all. I can't say if it worked in
other Ubuntu version.
