The problem isn't the plasmoid itself. When you try to enable the desktop effect, the xserver itself crashes, most likely due to a bug in the drivers. If enabling the desktop effects still causes you to return to the login screen, could you attach a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old? -- KDE 4 sessi
