The problem isn't the plasmoid itself. When you try to enable the
desktop effect, the xserver itself crashes, most likely due to a bug in
the drivers. If enabling the desktop effects still causes you to return
to the login screen, could you attach a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old?

Sorry, cannot say exactly. When trying to install this addon, aptitude
asks me to confirm not very good decisions, like "downgrade plasma,
etc.".
Note: I'm now on KDE 4.2 from kubuntu-experimental PPA. Do you have a
package for 4.2?
