alsamixer -Dhw was my savior. I dropped the PCM Front volume to 0 and
I'm golden now. Thanks very, very much Dru. I had this issue before I
upgraded to 9.10 and I fixed it easily in the sound settings, but this
time around I couldn't find PCM in the list of the new interface.

In the link Bryce Harrington posted above I found a fix that worked for
me. I typed "alsamixer -Dhw" into the terminal. Somehow was
changed (not by me) to be at 0% and increasing it removed the static and
restored the volume.

I have the same problem that seemed to have occured spontaneously. I
only hear static from my speakers or when I plug in headphones. The
sound device is Intel ALC262 Analog.

I think I may be experiencing the same thing with my Dell E series
Latitude Notebook. I get what sounds like static when using ALSA, but
it works fine using OSS. The static is rather consistent in nature
(kind of sounds like rain static generated on a HF yagi ham radio
antenna) which may mean I
