I suspect this is not a dupe of bug 264789, but rather of bug 221983.
The latter mentions specifically a situation where mobile phones used
for storage don't work, and other USB stoage devices do work; this is
also what I see (Kubuntu Intrepid). According to 221983, a fix was
committed to the upstr
