Please note that this feature has been implemented as a checkbox saying
"Remember this application for $FILETYPE files" in GNOME 2.29.92 (Ubuntu
10.04 Beta), however this feature is on by default and fails to function
properly (see Bug #550004).

For the behavior you described, it should only say
"Open test.asdf with:"

I would suggest then adding a checkbox on the Open with Other
Application screen for "Always use this program to open files with this
extension." This is much less cumbersome and (in my opinion) more
straightforward than having to change Open With in the file properties.

thank you for your bug report, changing the association was a bug though
so the current behaviour is correct, that's not because you open
something using a different software once that you want to change the
default selection
