The most working workaround (and I actually use it) is do not plug HTC
device to the computer. =)

For now, could you give me some guidelines how to "ensure that you have nothing
in /usr/local that could interfere here"? I am pretty sure that I have no, but
have no idea how to check this.

pelase attach your /etc/network/interfaces.
looking at syslog it lokos a bit broken for me. please ensure that you
have nothing in /usr/local that could interfere here.

please attach your complete syslog when running in normal mode ... then
tail your syslog and plug the pda in ... and wait a while. attach that
then.
