The resident behaviour is just bug #193198, which might suggest that the original problem (which I luckily can no longer reproduce) was somewhere in the interaction between firefox and pango, too. The cause of the bug is not in ttf-fonts-indic. After a few more experiments firefox was in a state where it would crash within seconds of every startup no matter which fonts were installed.
