There have been a large number of bugfixes with the latest VLC release,
1.0.0~rc2-1ubuntu1. Can you reproduce your issue with this latest
version? You can test this in Ubuntu Karmic, or Ubuntu Jaunty with the
MOTU Media PPA at https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive/ppa . Thanks

Have you tried with other files than those you linked to? I have tried many
jpg:s from different sources, and vlc refused to crash. It didn't show the pics
for more than a half a second of course, but it didn't crash.
Also tried this inside my virtual XP installation, latest vlc, it did not cras
Still, VLC still segfaults. Should a program be expected to behave like
this when opening media it doesn't support? Or even, although I don't
think it is the case, invalid or corrupted files?
While it may be of low importance, it still shows VLC has a problem that
could be affecting its stability

I tried this with the files you provided, and vlc segfaults. BUT i have
also tried with several of my own files (with different types of
characters in filename) , and vlc does _not_ crash. This makes me think
there is something strange with your files...
