Running the command showkeys in a text terminal shows that the volume up
and down keys (Fn F5 and Fn F6 in my system) only issue a key press

For anyone else - the title of this bug describes a fairly generic
symptom; if you think you're having the same problem it would be better
to file a separate bug report, unless you have exactly the same hardware
as Steffen.

Same problem for me on a Toshiba Satellite U305, after changing the
volume the volume bar graph stays blinking on the screen and the
keyboard and right mouse button stops responding. Going to a virtual
terminal and comming back make it work again.

I am experiencing the same issue on a Zepto 6625wd. My system doesn't crash,
but after pressing the up or down volume keys gnome no longer responds to key
presses, although the mouse pointer is still responsive. Gnome becomes
responsive again if I switch to a virtual terminal and then back again
