I am afraid there is currently no such mode as network manager disabled.
If you look at the code, all you can do is disable the grab of network
manager to all devices. if you "disable", you actually only disable
network manager for devices configured in /etc/network/interfaces using
an iface stanza
I meant that using both /etc/init.d/networking and
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager leads to conflicts since network-manager does
not disable itself anymore when /etc/init.d/networking is used (it is
disabled by default in intrepid).

The above statement is certainly incorrect:
"network-manager in intrepid does not support /etc/network/interfaces
configuration."
The ifupdown plugin does support interfaces in /etc/network/interfaces,
it just does not support mapping stanzas properly. As
/etc/init.d/networking is run before /etc
network-manager in intrepid does not support /etc/network/interfaces
configuration. The default intrepid configuration enables network-
manager and disable /etc/init.d/networking (which uses
/etc/network/interfaces). If you have both enabled, you will for sure
have problems.
Are you able to reprod
I guess bug 291564 is then a potential duplicate.
I think the biggest complaint is, that NetworkManager is successful in
killing my eth0, but no successful in displaying nm-applet. This makes
it impossible for me to use the network, unless I restart NetworkManager
as root. Something in the ifupd
As far as I can understand, NetowrkManager first checks
/etc/network/interfaces file too check which of the interfaces are
present in the file and what needs to be handled by it. Initially I was
switching between wired interface (eth0) and my wireless interface
(eth1) and then NM was handling it pe

I honestly believe this bug should be re-opened. It is IMHO
inacceptable that the network manager daemon needs to be restarted
before the nm-applet will show. I have a very similar issue, which I'll
log as a separate bug, as this one is closed, but it seems that all more

At last found the problem. In my /etc/network/interfaces, I had an entry for
eth0 as

On commenting these 2 lines, as well as the entry for ppp connection
which I had been using a while ago, network manager is able get
