This appears to be handled now by default in /lib/udev/keymaps/hewlett-
packard in Ubuntu 9.10:
0x92 brightnessdown # FnF7 (FnF9 on 6730b)
0x97 brightnessup # FnF8 (FnF10 on 6730b)
Closing as resolved.

says it's an invalid keystroke. See

I changed the /usr/share/hotkey-setup/hp.hk file and ran the xrandr
--output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native command under Ubuntu and it
fixed the issue.
Now I installed Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 4 and the same solution doesn't
seem to work. The /usr/share/hotkey-setup/hp.hk file didn't even exist
Works fine!
$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
thanks Scott!

Thanks Scott but in mine HP 6730b with Ubuntu 8.10 and Kernel 2.6.27-7
(or 8) the brightness doesn't change. The display shows the "sun popup"
but nothing change in the brightness. This is my hp-hk file modified:
setkeycodese001$KEY_PROG1 # Fn+Escape?
setkeycodese008$KEY_PRE
