I've experienced precisely the same issues while using the alternate
install of 8.10 on my mom's laptop. She cannot use a SATA on her much
older laptop and I'm no longer able to proceed past this point. I tried
re-burning the CD at the slowest speed with no improvement.

Just did the same thing - burned to DVD and it worked. I'm going to try
again tomorrow by burning a cd at a slower speed and see if that works.
I'd tried 2cds but both burned at max speed.
