I updated the beta version of 9.04. The device does not even appear.
Before I installed the backports and it recognised the wlan device. But it did
not detect any networks. And that is fascinating since the other laptop (with
hardy) has no problems whatsoever with detecting all surrounding

I suppose you're using Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS version.
You should get missing module for your wifi chipset.
