Great news! There's a workaround which actually works, not only under X
but under console as well!
Full credits and thanks go to Vojtech Pavlik for a) taking time to
analyze my bug report and my output, b) describing the bug and finding
where the problem lies, c) suggesting me the workaround.
If
Vojtech Pavlik, the maintainer for the "AT keyboard" Linux driver, told me that
a way to force the keyboard in "raw" mode (which is what happens on buggy
boots) is to boot with "i8042.direct=1". Unfortunately, there is not the
opposite option, i.e.: you cannot force the keyboard in "translated"
With a Dell Vostro 1000 and current stable Ubuntu (9.10) the bug is
still here.

I have also tested upstream kernel 2.6.31-999, with the same result.

Please note that my apport-collect uploads were taken with a live cd of
9.10-alpha4 (and the problem still persists), while I'm usually running
8.04.
Also, during the live cd experience, all proprietary drivers were NOT
loaded. The results, however, seem to be the same.

I have to confirm that using "i8042.reset" did not work properly for me, too.
On one boot the system did neither react on keyboard nor touch-pad.
But for me it was only one time in about 20 boots.
Perhaps this is why i8042.reset is not used by default.

I had to use "i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop" instead
of just "i8042.reset", otherwise my keyboard hanged up on cold boots 80%
of the times!

Yes, you are right: 'i8042.reset=1' should be added to the #kopt line. Then
'update-grub' should be run to update all menu entries.
Since I did not know how to add kernel options, I simply googled for it and the
first result I read was to do it as described above. Sorry!

I used this workaround (Daniel and Mantas). It works for the german keyboard
layout. But I also use the latinamerican layout and have to switch between them
very often. For the latinamerican keyboard the workaround does not work. Does
anyone know what to do?

Bios has been 2.6.3 since Feisty, so that rules out the Bios I guess.
This started to happen when I upgraded to Intrepid. I use the 64 bit
version, btw.

Hi,
I got the same problem, even though it happens randomly, not mattering if I did
a reboot or a cold boot. It specially affects the AltGr-Key and as I've read in
several forums happens on some Dell-models. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 which
in the last 18 months didn't have any problems with th

reporting the "showkey" output when I press the AltGr key:
normally (i.e.: everything working fine):
