Intrepid Ibex reached end-of-life on 30 April 2010 so I am closing the
report. The bug has been fixed in newer releases of Ubuntu.

The upstream patch referenced appears to be in the upcoming Jaunty
kernel. If you'd like to test the latest pre-release of Jaunty 9.04

I can confirm this bug. It still affects me exactly as you described
with 2.6.27.1.
Your workaround worked for me, after I compiled 2.6.27.1 with
CONFIG_MAC80211_DEBUGFS turned off the lockups went away. My hardware is
an iwl3945-based Lenovo T60p.
