after upgrading to jaunty this seems to be fixed.
the upgrade has apparently cleared out the hotkey-setup directory
entirely.

But it turns out the bright keys on acer aspire one are 'Fn + left arrow' or
'Fn + right arrow'

When you boot into ubuntu and decrease the brightness it works fine and
the visual popup display the bar decreasing. After the bar is empty you
can increase the bright but there's no visual feedback besides the
screen getting brighter, when the bright is at maximum the visual bar is
still empty. My
