Hmmm... I take it back. Maybe I did get it to open (with Autorun Prompt,
unless I am mistaken.) But it is producing no text file, at least not
that I can see. Is the script supposed to be some place in particular
when I run it, like my desktop, for example?

I've got a bit of a problem, as do many who upgraded to Intrepid instead
of making a fresh install of it. The default apps to open certain files
have gone all crewy. So, folders were opening with f-spot instead of
nautilus, and PyPar2 was opening all sorts of things. Well, my system

I'm not sure whether this should be in with this bug or not.
I've got a dell vostro 1310 (with same realtek soundcard) and have a
variation of this problem. i've never managed to get sound working at

Hi Everyone,
So it seems the issue is slightly different now. It's not that you have
no sound, it's just the quality is not what you expect. It would be
helpful if we can gather some additional sound information from you
system. Please download and run the alsa-info.sh script - http://alsa-

I have an Acer 6920G with the lack of sound issue with kernel 2.6.24-21.
I rebuilt and installed OSS as described here,
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-921637.html, with success.

I play music files in Rhythmbox, but I still cannot make and select

Just curious if anyone has tried upgrading to Intrepid and if this is
still an issue?

Also updated to 2.6.24-21-generic, and also lost all sound, and as above,
"dmesg|grep snd" gives no output, neither with nor without sudo. I am not on a

motherboard, namely the Biostar P4M90-M4. Here are my specs:

dmesg|grep snd provides no output on my computer. Sound works fine with
2.6.24-18. Oh well, I'll keep using that. By the way, a friend of mine
has a computer with virtually the same hardware and the motherboard and
graphics card are exactly the same, but he has sound on kernel
2.6.24-21 - strange.
I can confirm bug when updating to 2.6.24-21 kernel, I'm also using Dell
PPA in my Inspiron 1525. Haven't tried fix yet.

I can confirm that Dell added some packages for the preinstalled Dell

DVDs they added LinDVD or they provided drivers for the specific

Solved with adjusted Dell work around.
Zenith:
thanks for your link to the Dell workaround, which otherwise would be
very hard to find.
I did adjust the procedure for upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
Restore name of sound driver that old modem driver renamed:
$ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-21-g
That's the same procedure i followed. I think it is a problem involving only
people who have added the ppa dell repository (
http://ppa.launchpad.net/dell-team/ubuntu ) to their software sources. Dell
team publishes a modified version of kernel with pre-built modules useful for
Dell systems. Un

Hi Daniel, hi Zenith:
First of all, Thanks for your fast response. Asrequested I created some
more output for troubleshooting.

here is the dmseg for the 2.6.24-21 kernel when I upgrade to it:

I solved the problem. The fact that all the systems affected by this problems
are Dells made me think about something related this family of machines.
I had personally added to the repositories the ppa's one (

Looks pretty much like a bug.
I updated this morning from version
Linux 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP
Same problem, same distro, same kernel upgrade, and same laptop (Inspiron 6400
with SigmatelAudio). I posted some deeper information in another bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/270005 (already marked as duplicate).
Everything works as usual selecting the 2.6.24-19 image from grub, witho
I'm having this same problem with my Inspiron too. Have tried various
fixes including check and installing any missing sound modules and
uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA. Still no joy!
Suggestions on a permanent fix for this anyone?
For the moment I'm just going to restore to a previous version
