I've now re-installed the final release of the 64-bit edition of
Intrepid, and there is no more shutdown problem for me (either before or
after installing updates).
So, it seems to be fixed. I don't know whe

Oops, I meant to say Ctrl-Alt-Del.
In any case, I have now reinstalled with the 32-bit edition of Intrepid,
and all is OK.
