hi, I do not know what's the problem for your OS,
but if you want to work with Ubuntu 8.04 for your case, I think you should
make a complete installation, from scratch. Otherwise, try to wait ubuntu

Have you checked your /etc/fstab and compared to what exists under /dev ?
I remember I had the same problem while upgrading some time ago. The name
scheme for disk changed and I just had to update my /etc/fstab.
For your kernel problem, I have no clue :) Maybe more details would be useful.
